I LIVE!
Finally some good looking sci-fi shows this fall, a total of five premiering this week: Chuck, Heroes Season 2 (eeeee!yay!), Journeyman, and Stargate Atlantis Season 4. I will also be watching the premier of bionic woman, but mostly out of kindness, as A)I am way to young to have seen the original and therefore don’t really care, and B)The sci-fi component of it appears to be: “hey look at me! I can leap tall buildings in a single bound! I can run faster than a speeding car! I can even look at objects really really closely! But it’s not because of superpowers, it’s because of SCIENCE! Not Superpowers!” (Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against science, we go out for lunch all the time and occasionally go bowling with math, but in this case it seems more like they want a superpower show but are just using science to do it). I will post a review don’t worry, and who knows maybe I’ll like it but…eh.
So yea reviews:
Chuck
First: the premise. Retail nerd gets spy secrets accidentally downloaded into his brain, and the NSA and CIA take jobs at his workplace to keep an eye on him.
I’d like to say that i give points for the names of the stores (Buy More, Nerd Herd, and Large Mart? Nice). However the show loses points for ripping off Jake 2.0 (Chuck even has the same hairstyle as Jake!), but they do it well. It’s a bit like if you took Jake 2.0, mixed in 5 parts The Office/Office Space, 5 parts The IT Crowd, and 1 part Clerks. It looks to be good. Not Heroes good, but thats like saying ‘it doesn’t have final fantasy level of graphics…’ for a video game. In this you don’t really need a super complex plot, cause the humor makes up for it.
Heroes
This is why I love this show: right from the beginning it makes you poke at those little questions in the back of your mind that you don’t normally ask on other shows, because you figure ‘hey it’s part of that characters back story, they’ll tell us when they tell us’ but with Heroes, they poke it just enough so you get a glimpse of the truth, and go crazy trying to figure the rest out. As expected for the first episode, it’s way to early to make any remotely founded theories (and yet, here I go).
Theory 1: Peter had his memories wiped by the Haitian (Duh) (but if Peter get his abilities from remembering other people, how did he blast that guy in the shipping container (unless one of those guys has a power. Hmm))
Theory 2: The guy who killed Kaito (lets call him SA for Symbol Assassin) is spreading the disease mentioned by Mohinder intentionally, though most likely does not have ties to the company. Potentially has a teleportation power, or something to allow him to escape the fall, making sure only Kaito’s body was found at the bottom of the Devaueux building. May also even be the source of Molly Walker’s nightmares.
Theory 3: The Wonder Twins (Maya and Alejandro) have some sort of power that only activates when they are apart from each other ( or Maya has some sort of life sucking ability, whereas Alejandro has power cancellation).
Theory 4:(crazy unlikely but possible)SA is working for, has the same boss as, or is the boss of the Haitian. (yea unlikely since the Haitian saved Claire, but the SA and/or his group are killing Heroes, but the symbol fits methinks)
And Finally:
Journeyman
First, bonus points for having it in san francisco, both because it’s an awesome city, and because another time travel story took place there. They however lose points for not having a consistant time tavel theory: If he changed it so the kid and the wife weren’t shot, they changes can only take effect once he makes them, but if future Livia can go back in time to make him exit into the alleyway, BEFORE he zaps her off the plane, then that change has taken effect before he made it. (Keep in mind we are talking before and after in a time travel drama, but I am referring to his frame of reference, which the show seems to follow). Overall a good looking series, with much potential for brain twisting (duh; time travel), and good plot. There aren’t enough good time travel stories nowadays, with Heroes being one of the only ones.
Now the failed shows that didn’t make it onto my fall lineup:
Pushing Daisies: A very good show that may even make it back on if bionic woman falls through, but I couldn’t fit it all in and still keep my grades up, so this got bumped. A pity actually, the show is about a guy who, if he touches someone, he brings them back to life, but if he touches them again they die permanently. And if they stay alive longer than a few minutes, then someone else dies to replace them. They show’s premise is just absurd enough to be interesting, kinda like wonderfalls in that respect. I predict the studio execs will cancel it after one season, but it will have a cult following.
The Big Bang Theory:
Pros: Geek jokes, explanations for nuclear physics the ditsy blond next door can understand.
Cons:Sitcom, the ditsy blond next door can understand the explanations, geek stereotypes, teaching nerds that anti-socialization should be avoided at all costs, laugh tracks, did i mention it’s a sitcom?
Yea, not going to happen.
Now I’m going to sleep before I nod off and start drooling on the keyboard, which will then short out causing me to have to type this all again.
Expect Bionic Woman review on Thursday and a Stargate Atlantis Review on Saturday.
May the schwartz be with you!
